I overheard two people on the bus talking about subliminal messaging, and how they are dangerous and should be made illegal. Now, conversations about subliminal messaging used to be rare, but more and more I am hearing strangers mentioning them – in this instance I couldn’t help turning around and telling them how subliminal messages really worked.
The basis of their argument was that the subliminal audio could be giving all sorts of negative messages, and could influence people to take negative action, and perhaps even put people at risk.
In reality this is not the case. This example I think illustrates this best. Occasionally people ask me if I have ever made a subliminal mp3 with a message such as “I love subliminal mp3s, I want to buy more”. I can understand why people would be worried with a message such as this, and I can also answer hand on heart that I have never used such a message.
There is a lot of folk tales about subliminal messaging and what it is and isn’t capable of – but get it from the “horse’s mouth”; mine: Including a message like this wouldn’t work – and this is for 2 reasons:
1. You still keep control – if you don’t want to do something then you won’t do it still – just like with hypnosis. Subliminal messages can only help enforce and help you towards goals and things you do want to accomplish.
2. Even if that message was there and you didn’t get the primary benefit of the mp3 – i.e. you did not feel more motivated, or confident perhaps – then you would have the clarity of mind to think “the mp3 didn’t work, I don’t want another.”
